Slayer es una banda de Thrash Metal formada en EE.UU

Fue fundada en el parque de Huntington (no Huntington Beach como se ha divulgado a menudo), California en 1982 por los guitarristas Kerry King y Jeff Hanneman, reclutando para la banda al bajista/vocalista de origen chileno Tom Araya y al baterista de origen cubano Dave Lombardo. Lombardo ha estado dentro y fuera de la banda varias veces, pero los otros integrantes han sido constantes. Hanneman y King son los compositores principales del grupo.

La banda ha sido fuertemente criticada por grupos religiosos y el público en general, debido a que tanto sus letras como el arte de sus álbumes tratan con temas como satanismo, violencia, asesinatos en serie y guerras, y se le ha acusado de apoyar el nazismo. Esta última acusación debida a la afición de Jeff Hanneman a coleccionar material de temática nazi y por letras como la canción "Angel Of Death", que trata sobre la figura de Josef Mengele. Sin embargo, los miembros del grupo niegan estas imputaciones, asegurando que simplemente están interesados en el tema.

Desde su debut en 1983, la banda ha lanzado dos álbumes en vivo, dos compilaciones y diez álbumes de estudio, y han vendido más de cuatro millones de álbumes sólo en los Estados Unidos. Han recibido dos nominaciones al Grammy, ganando una en 2007 por la canción "Eyes Of The Insane" y liderado festivales mundiales como el Ozzfest y el Download Festival. I han sido catalogados como uno de los Cuatro Grandes Thrash Metal (The Big Four O' Thrash).

Slayer es conocido por sus tendencias musicales particulares, que incluyen solos de guitarra, trémolos rápidos, pedales dobles y gritos al cantar.

Sus primeros trabajos han sido valorados por su velocidad e instrumentación, que combinan las estructuras del Hardcore y el Speed Metal, resultando en un sonido muy rápido y agresivo. El álbum Reign in Blood es el más veloz y agresivo, mientras que Diabolous in Musica tiene un sonido más oscuro y lento, God Hate Us All fue tocado con guitarras de 7 cuerdas, tuvo una orientación musical distinta e incluso fue marcado como Nu Metal por algunos fans. Algunas canciones exhiben elementos progresivos como cambios a tiempos poco comunes como 3/4 o 7/4, extensas interpretaciones instrumentales y arreglos no convencionales.

Araya nunca ha utilizado el gran estilo vocal "gutural" asociado usualmente al Death Metal, así como también la banda jamás se ha autoproclamado Death Metal. Sin embargo, los arreglos en guitarra y batería de sus primeras creaciones tienen muchos elementos presentes en el Death Metal moderno. Bandas como Vader, Children of Bodom y Dark Funeral han rendido tributo a la banda.


Historia [editar]La banda nunca fue conocida como DRAGONSLAYER, como se creia y tampoco el nombre SLAYER de las siglas (Satan Laughs As Your Eternally Roots), segun Kerry King en una entrevista dice "Yo nunca supe que la banda se llamó dragonslayer, eso es solo un mito, y el que lo inventó que se joda"

El primer álbum de Slayer, Show No Mercy, fue lanzado en 1983 por Metal Blade Records. Actualmente, no goza de la relevancia que tienen los álbumes más recientes de la banda, pero aún es considerado una obra clásica por algunos y contiene algunos favoritos de los fans tales como "Die By The Sword", "The Antichrist" y "Black Magic". Era esencial para la banda, ganar un culto seguidor y respeto en la comunidad del metal, el álbum mostraba gran influencia del NWOBHM. El segundo lanzamiento de la banda, Haunting the Chapel EP, era considerablemente más oscuro y más orientado al Thrash Metal que su predecesor, y fue considerado por haber puesto las bases para lo que se convertiría en el sonido clásico de la banda. Contiene los temas "Chemical Warfare", "Captor Of Sin" y "Haunting The Chapel"


Su segundo lanzamiento, Hell Awaits, amplió la oscuridad de Haunting the Chapel donde el infierno y Satanás fueron los objetos de canciones. La oferta musical fue, probablemente, la más progresiva, conteniendo 7 canciones la mayoría más largas que el resto de su repertorio musical. La canción de apertura tiene una voz demoniaca diciendo "Join us" (Únetenos) al revés, responsable de la idea cristiana del "backmasking" usado para difundir mensajes anti-cristianos a través de la música.

Después de haber recibido una oferta para una nueva grabación con Def Jam Recordings de Rick Rubin, Slayer firmó y comenzó a trabajar en su tercer álbum con Rick Rubin como co-productor.

El resultado fue Reign in Blood en 1986. La revista "Kerrang!" lo describió como "el álbum más pesado de todos los tiempos". En 2003 Slayer tocó el álbum en su totalidad a través de su tour (algo que nunca hicieron en el tour original). Un DVD de una de sus actuaciones fue lanzado con el título Still Reigning. El show "Reign in Blood" concluyó con la banda siendo mojada por lluvia de sangre falsa.

South of Heaven, lanzado en 1988 marcó un cambio musical leve. En contraste con la agresividad presente en "Reign in Blood", disminuyeron la velocidad de los tiempos en algunas canciones. También agregaron elementos como las guitarras no distorsionadas y atenuaron los estilos vocales no oídos en álbumes anteriores. Algunos críticos los elogiaron al demostrar su deseo de crecer musicalmente y evitar ser repetitivos. Pero los nuevos sonidos decepcionaron a algunos de sus fans quienes estaban acostumbrados a los estilos de sus anteriores discos. Aunque los fanáticos siguen divididos en el tema, dos canciones del álbum (Mandatory Suicide" y "South of Heaven") se han convertido en permanentes adiciones a la lista en vivo. Después de South of Heaven, la banda grabó un cover del clásico tema de la banda Iron Butterfly "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida". Esta canción fue incluida en la banda sonora de la película "Less Than Zero".

El siguiente álbum Seasons in the Abyss, fue un regreso al sonido de Reign In Blood, y aclamado por los fans. El videoclip de la canción homónima al disco, fue grabado en las pirámides de Egipto.

Un doble álbum en vivo, Decade of Aggression en 1991, con un receso de 3 años, (a excepción de un breve viaje a California, Arizona y Baja California, México, como preparativos para la aparición en el "1992 Donnington Heavy Metal festival") hasta Divine Intervention en 1994. En este nuevo álbum aparecen canciones sobre Jeffrey Dahmer “213,” (su número de apartamento) y Reinhard Heydrich “SS-3” (el número de la licencia de su coche) entre otros temas de asesinato y los males de la iglesia y del gobierno. Live Intrusion, un video de un concierto, fue lanzado por esas fechas y ofrece un cover de Venom "Witching Hour" con Machine Head que eran la ayuda de Slayer en ese entonces. Las relaciones entre Kerry King y Robb Flynn se han deteriorado desde entonces gravemente.

Undisputed Attitude (1996) fue un conjunto de covers de hardcore punk, cubriendo canciones de Minor Threat, T.S.O.L., D.R.I. y otros. El álbum estuvo a punto de llamarse como una canción original de la banda, “Gemini”. Otro nombre considerado era "Selected and Exhumed" pero fue descartado [falta citación].

Diabolus in Musica, fue lanzado en 1998 y marcó, junto con una modificación del logo, un cambio en el estilo de composición de la banda. Este estilo incorporó un nuevo rumbo en algunas estructuras de canciones, con diferentes reacciones por parte de los fans. God Hates Us All, fue lanzado el 11 de septiembre de 2001, la publicidad y la temática del álbum generó una conexión no intencionada con los ataques terroristas de ese día. También se lanzó un DVD en vivo (War at the Warfield) y un box set (Soundtrack to the Apocalypse) que ofrecía rarezas, CD's en vivo, actuaciones en DVD y parafernalia de Slayer.

En 1996, los padres de Elyse Pahler los acusaron de animar a los asesinos de su hija a través de sus letras.

La banda recibió su primera nominación a un Grammy por “Mejor Actuación de Heavy Metal” el 8 de enero de 2002.

El 6 de junio de 2006 (fecha en que se esperaba el lanzamiento de su nuevo álbum por las connotaciones satánicas, pero después fue aplazado por dificultades de grabación) es la fecha propuesta por una organización, conocida como "National Day of Slayer LLC", para celebrar el "Día Nacional de Slayer" en Estados Unidos, animando a la gente a oír al grupo en sus casas, oficinas, o cualquier lugar ese día.

Después de una larga pausa, el muy esperado nuevo álbum “Christ Illusion” sale al mercado el 8 de Agosto de 2006. Este álbum es el primero con Dave Lombardo en la batería desde “Seasons in the Abyss”. Y el tema promocional “Cult” (Culto) se puede escuchar gratis a través de la página [www.slayer.net].

“Christ Illusion” debutó en el #5 de la cartelera Billboard Top 200, vendiendo así 62.000 copias. Esta es la mejor posición obtenida en carteleras por Slayer, previamente en 1994 “Seasons in the Abyss” debutó en el puesto #8.


Además, durante su gira latinoamericana, la agrupación hizo un alto en su tour para filmar el primer video-clip de su álbum "Christ Illusion". La filmación se realizó el sábado 12 de agosto de 2006 en la Ciudad de Los Angeles.

El video pertenece a la canción "Eyes of the Insane" que habla sobre la guerra y sus terribles consecuencias. Fue dirigido por Tony Petrossian (quien también ha dirigido los video-clips de otras bandas como "Slipknot", "Stone Sour" ", entre otras).
